It takes a minimum of 40 hours of supervised training to be an ADI.
The driving test comprises of 3 parts;
Part-1 Testing Theory, Hazard Perceptions etc.
Part-2 Mainly Practicle Driving & Maneuvering with a test instructor from DVSA.
Part-3 Testing of your skills as an instructor delivering real life instructions to a pupil while the DVSA instructor observes.

I have been an Ex DVSA SE ADIExaminer (for L test & ADI & PDI) including part 2 and Standards Check in West London, for the last 6 years following a 20-year career in the Civil Service. Over those 6 years I have developed my teaching skills to achieve a higher than national average pass rate with my Instructors majority of them first time in my new private business Sapphire Driving Academy.
I cover all West London and the surrounding areas and now concentrate solely on specialist ADI Drivers Training. My role now is as an on-road Specialist Driving Instructor trainer for the new national ‘Safe and Considerate Driving ’ course for who desires to become a qualified Driving Instructor.
As with other ADIs I have been through the rigorous Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checking system. Like many ADIs I deliver standard learner driver training at a very competitive price and with a high success rate.
We have instructors in our team who are registered as Approved Instructors with West London County Councils, which means that you can receive expert tuition from my Academy and qualify for a substantial grant towards the cost of the PassPlus training (if you are a West London resident). We offer all this ADI driver training and Learner training in an automatic or Manual transmission car.
I am happy to discuss bespoke training for any ADI driver, whether on a provisional or full licence level. Perhaps you would like a confidence builder for teaching skills.
Lessons are a minimum of one hour. I am happy to do one and half hours or two hours to be mutually agreed. I would not recommend any one lesson exceeding two hours for the majority of pupils. Neither am I an advocate of very intensive training (“I want to start to learn and take my test in two weeks please”!) as it is simply not an effective way of teaching in my opinion. However if it is a requirement for the customer we have expert Instructors on our team that can provide this service known as an intensive crash course.
You will find that our Instructors spend the majority of the lessons with you driving, rather than being parked up for lengthy periods having cosy chats! You get what you pay for – professional tuition from a professional instructor trainer.

I’m Nadia, your ADI Specialist Trainer and I have worked for DVSA as a Driving Examiner for just over 7 years. And in the last 6 years I worked as an SC Examiner in West London covering majority of the local test centres testing part 2’s, part 3’s, and standard checks. frequently asked questions (FAQ )
1 - What are the prerequisites for becoming a driving instructor?
To do this you must be over 21 years old and have held a driving licence for over three years, without holding any motoring convictions. You must also get a new Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to start your application, even if you already have one. You'll need to pass the approved driving instructor part 1 and part 2 exams. You'll then get a licence to give instruction and legally charge for lessons. You must also pass the part 3 exam to get onto the register of approved driving instructors.
2 - How long does it take & how many attempts do I have to pass ?
It takes between 6 to 12 months to pass your driving instructor's test and for each of 3 parts you have 3 attempts to pass, otherwise the process starts again from theory test.
3 - How Challenging is the Exam?
It is quite challenging to pass the driving instructor's test with 45% for Part-1, 60% pass rate for Part-2 and only 35% pass the Part-3 test. At Sapphire Driving Academy out of 40 driving instructors passing out last year 87% passed their tests in first attempt.
4 - I work full-time, can I still train to be a Driving Instructor?
Yes you can become a driving instructor without having to quit your main job. Give us a call and we will customise the training for you.
